“Choose Tap” Countdown | East Burwood
By Esmond Aponso
East Burwood Football Club has a long and rich history.
Over the 100 years the Club has been prided itself on consistently achieving to the highest standard, and with 12 senior premierships (2nd highest in EFL history) they have their reasons.
The football club has produced players such as Trent Hotton, Adam White, Brad Fisher, Blake Grima, Adrew Carrazzo, Josh Gibson and Robbie Gray who have gone on to AFL Careers.
The Rams also boast a high quality list of previous coaches; Ross Henshaw, Chris Connolly, Alan Richardson have all taken the reins at Ram land and this year David Calthorpe will be the one to steer the on field performance of the club.
In any case, the last couple of years haven’t been easy on a football club that finds itself between a rock and a hard place.
The Rams won just one game in 2014, just one. The clubs worst ever premierships in its 100 plus year history.
The club has heavily recruited over the summer with the likes of Luke Jackson, Ben Gill, Tim McKintosh, Andrew Hill and these players stemming from mostly country clubs via the Northern Football League.
The recruitment strategy of the club is to bring ready-made footballers with hard bodies who have experience. This along with the return of Sam Kildaf, Eric McPhee and Mitch Cosgrove from being overseas in 2014, Darby Edgeworth and Paul McNamara will also return from Injury.
These players will provide additional player list depth, hardened football bodies and good on field leadership which will assist the team to be more competitive in 2015.
In addition, East Burwood has several players who are playing in the VFL and if they do not progress in establishing themselves in their respective VFL teams, these players will be welcome back to the club to make the playing list even stronger.
Calthorpe is not placing great expectations on the team this season but at the same time he is also not limiting what could be achieved in 2015, stating, “It was a rough year last year, but we feel the club is developing and honestly finals may not be out of the question.” For the second consecutive season The Rams have not been able to field an Under 19’s side which has disappointed the coaching staff and everyone at the club, Calthorpe stating “It’s a shame, it would have helped us out and more importantly assisted in the development and preparation of young players for senior football.” Craig O’Reilly is expected to be named as Captain in 2015 and an air of expectation and enthusiasm is flowing through the club as it prepares for the season ahead.
East Burwood will take on Bayswater at Bayswater Oval in Round 1, the Rams will be looking to spoil the 1000th game festivities.
