“Choose Tap” Countdown | Scoresby Football Club
One Year at a Time…
It’s difficult to avoid a cliché when conveying the triumphs and tribulations of a courageous football club. In saying that, President of the Scoresby Football Club Steve Weir, manages to put the Magpies’ pre-season efforts into a couple of words. “Very good,” Weir laughed. Bruised and battered from their tireless efforts in Division 1 last year, the Magpies were struck with misfortune in the early stages of 2014. Players were signing off and the playing list looked fragile.
That’s why 2015 is shaping up to be very good, not just good.
“Numbers are good, compared to last year,” Weir said.
“This time last year we had about thirteen senior players, this time it looks like we’ve got roughly 40 senior players – and that’s very good.”
Inside the growing inventory of Magpies arises an old favourite. Marc Williams has slipped back into the Black and White and looks promising for Scoresby in his pre-season workouts.
“[They’re] all fit and healthy. There’s a lot of people returning back to the club to help us rebuild in Division 2,” Weir described.
It’s one thing to have players hitting the field, but an entirely different thing to have them clicking as a unit off the field. However, Weir seems to have that down pat with his Magpies.
“Socially, we’ve been going very well – considering the numbers we’ve had at the club,” he said.
“To be honest, we’re just consolidating ourselves and making sure the rut from previous years doesn’t set in.”
Despite the positivity that has emitted from the club in its recent months, the upward battle will inevitably transcend into the Magpies’ 2015 season.
Scoresby’s best weapons just may be a new Division, new players and a new outlook – along with a sensible, and possibly cliché, attitude. “Am I allowed to say something cliché?,” Weir asked. “We’re just going to take it one year at a time. Once all the off field and the on-field things come together, naturally it comes – success just comes later on.” “But we just want to re-establish ourselves financially and make it a great place to be so the players enjoy coming there and players then actually stay.”
If there’s any team with their eyes on the ball this year, it’s the Magpies. Catch them play Wantirna South on April 11th at Walker Reserve.
