CHANDLER MEDAL WRAP

Over 400 people attended the Eastern Football League’s night of nights on Wednesday at Manningham Function Centre, for the annual Chandler Medal evening.

Doncaster’s Chris Annakis took out the coveted Division 1 best and fairest, the Sir Gilbert Chandler Medal, off the back of a stellar season which saw the versatile midfielder and forward play all 19 games for the Sharks, kicking 26 goals and often proving pivotal to his side on game-day. Annakis also represented the EFL at this year’s Worksafe AFL Victoria Community Championships, playing a crucial role in the narrow victory over the fast-finishing EDFL.

Mulgrave’s Sebastian Henderson was named the Kenneth Wright Medallist with the Division 2 best and fairest, as the solid defender often played a swingman role throughout 2017 causing opposition coaches and players headaches at the selection table with match-ups.

Meanwhile, Ringwood spearhead Trent Farmer had a night to savour, taking out the Paul Edie Medal with the Division 3 best and fairest, in addition to winning the Division 3 goal-kicking and being named captain of the Division 3 SEN Team of the Year.

Division 4 saw Kilsyth’s Sean Currey awarded the Perc James Medal for the best and fairest player, after a consistent season which saw his Cougars just miss the finals.

Bayswater’s Marissa Lee was awarded the best and fairest player for the Deakin University Eastern Region Women’s Competition, finishing the highest up in the voting of all EFL clubs, and two behind overall winner, AFL Yarra Ranges’ Melanie Hogg of Mount Evelyn.

Meanwhile, team-mate Leesa McShane took out the leading goal-kicker award, rounding out a sensational season for the Waters, who finished inaugural premiers.

Melissa Martinov (Boronia) was crowned leading goal-shooter for the Premier Division of the netball competition, while Stephanie McNay won the Premier best and fairest.

Brett Beston was named the 2017 Clinton Grybas Award winner, having worked tirelessly on the EFL Media Team this year across a variety of roles including commentary, special comments, boundary-riding, panel member, plus more.
