#InFocus | EAST BURWOOD

East Burwood has had a busy off-season, signing a number of new recruits ahead of its Division 3 campaign.

Among the key signings include Sam Caruso and Toby Ryan, transferring from Doncaster after playing the bulk of their careers at the Wangaratta Rovers. A stellar 2016 season with the Sharks saw the duo finish in the top 20 in last year’s Chandler Medal.

The Rams have also welcomed back Mitch Cosgrove, who returns after also playing at Doncaster last season. The 26 year-old brings a wealth of experience, having played for the club in Division 1.

East Burwood kicks off its season on Saturday, 8th of April, when it takes on Scoresby at Scoresby Recreation Reserve.

2016: One win, 17 losses, 10th.

2017 leaders:

President – Andrew Worner

Senior Coach – Wayne Cripps

Senior Captain – Mark Holland/Sam Kilduff

East Burwood treasurer Rob Peak spoke to EFL.org.au ahead of the Rams’ 2017 campaign…

What has the pre-season been like so far for the club? Is there any group that have really impressed (younger players, veterans, new recruits, etc.)?

Just like all clubs, we have had a good pre-season focussing on our fitness and style of play. We have had over 20 new recruits. The enthusiasm, along with the way the group has galvanised so quickly has been impressive.

If you could take one thing you learnt from the 2016 season to improve this year, what would it be?

Winning games early on. Last season we let slip a couple of winnable games early in the season which would have given us some confidence and momentum. Our first month of the season is a tough draw, so it’s important that we are up and going.

Who are the players who you think will have a break-out season, who may have gone under the radar in the past as far as being known across the EFL community?

Luke Brown went under the radar last season and won our best and fairest. He has had another big pre-season and will improve again. Sam Coates and Joey Canuan have both been impressive throughout the pre-season and are ready to make an impact on senior footy.

Where does the club see itself in three years’ time?

Stability off the field and a winning culture on the field. What division that is in is irrelevant, as long as we have in place those two things.

Finally, who in your division do you feel is the greatest threat to your chances of success in 2017 and why?

Templestowe. They have shown consistently over the last few years that they are a benchmark team.
