HALF OPEN OR HALF CLOSED?

Many Eastern Football League pundits would argue that South Belgrave through the last couple of years are, themselves closing their own Premiership window in Division 3.

For everyone with the above view, a similar number would argue that the club is being built up and will be looking towards the future rather than short term success.

South Belgrave has now spent 2 years in Division 3 with a 19-17 record. The Saints have, on a number of occasions looked like contesting for finals but find themselves slipping at the crucial step.

Since entering the competition the club has successfully moulded a senior side full of the finest young talent with older, experienced regular senior footballers. Many at South Belgrave understand there is an ever growing contingent of players who are pushing past 30 years old and if sustained success is heading up the mountain it needs to be done quickly.

Having Division 2 Premiership Coach Hayden Stanton appointed last season opened the eyes of the South Belgrave faithful with a number of players entering the club in the past 18 months.

South have always held in high regard the quality of players who are their own, players who have bought into what the club is about and are willing to stick around and see something bright in the future. For a city slicker it must certainly be daunting heading into such a tight-knit community.

The Saints kick start their season at home against a new look Heathmont side in what is always a mouth-watering. The game against the Jets kicks of a first month of football that could make or break their season – Scoresby (Home), Upper FTG (Away – ANZAC Day), and then in Round 4 they take on Division 4 Premiers Warrandyte.

Two of the new comers to the Division and two clubs who they would see themselves on par with, It’s a first month that could set them up for the whole of 2016.

South Belgrave form part of a chasing pack behind Templestowe and The Basin. Alongside clubs like Ringwood, Upper FTG and Heathmont they will be looking to build and will be fighting to occupy the final couple of spots in Finals 2016.

Yesterday: North Ringwood
