Bendigo Bank Netball Review | Week Five

Another weekend of the 2023 Bendigo Bank Netball season is complete. Take a look at last weekend’s results below ahead of some massive clashes on the court tomorrow night for Round Six.

Division One

East Burwood Black 56 def FTG Eagles Blue 37 Coldstream Grey 38 lost to East Ringwood Black 65 Lilydale Falcons 43 lost to Croydon 48 East Burwood Rams 40 lost to Vermont Eagles Gold 66

It was first versus fourth this weekend as Coldstream played East Ringwood at Waverley Court last Friday Night. The reigning premiers showed their class, comfortably winning with Emily Salmon putting together an incredible 52-goal game.

It was a much closer game for the other undefeated side of the division, Croydon. They were challenged by Lilydale all night with the Falcons even taking a three-point lead at the main break, a big turnaround from their Round One match-up. The Blues managed to hold on for a five-point win, starting the season with five wins.

Croydon have been without star shooter Genevieve Abbott for the last couple of weeks after starting the season in strong form with 88 goals. Celine Dodd and Emma Hayes have stood up in Abbott’s absence, combining for 48 this weekend.

East Burwood Black was impressive again on Friday Night, winning their fourth game of the season with a 19-point win over Ferntree Gully. Ella Tweedale was hard to stop, shooting another 26 goals to take her tally to 147 after five games. Tweedale is now tied at the top of the leading goal shooters with East Burwood Rams’ Rylee Hamilton who shot 30 goals in their loss to Vermont Gold on the weekend.

This Friday Night, East Burwood Black take on the undefeated Croydon side in what should be the big highlight of the round. That match starts at 9:35 PM at HE Parker Reserve on Friday Night.

Division Two

Blackburn Black 38 def Heathmont Jets 29 Vermont Eagles Yellow 33 lost to East Ringwood Blue 39 Croydon North MLOC 20 lost to Kilsyth Cougars 39 Knox Falcons 36 def Bayswater Gold 33 Oakleigh District White 28 drew with Coldstream Black 28

Oakleigh District had their second draw of the season as they took it up to Coldstream Black who were previously undefeated. Oakleigh led all night but Coldstream’s 11 goal to 6 last quarter was enough for the Cougars to pinch two points. Jessica Ford again led the way with 19 goals.

The other close match of the round was out at Waverley when the winless Bayswater side just fell short against Knox Falcons. The two teams had come down from Division One after grading and were evenly matched up last Friday.

Bayswater led for the majority of the night before Knox took control in the third term with ten goals to five. They held on in the last with Jacqueline Harfield scoring 22 goals.

Division Three Chirnside Park Panthers 21 lost to The Basin Cubs 55 Montrose Demons 28 lost to Boronia Gold 29 Vermont Eagles Violet 23 lost to Vermont Eagles White 44 Nunawading Lions Gold 28 lost to Heathmont White 36 The Basin Kodiaks 25 lost to Lilydale Gold 31 East Burwood Grey 25 lost to Heathmont Yellow 31

The highlight of Division Three last weekend came at HE Parker when Boronia came from behind to pinch a one-point win over Montrose. The Demons led at Half Time by eight points before Boronia came flying home, Taylor Dougherty scoring the match winner in the dying stages of the game. Her 18-goal performance was rewarded with the Bevilles Eastland Best on Court.

In the battle of the two Vermont Division Three sides, the Vermont Eagles White took bragging rights with a 21-point win. Grace Hartman starred with 33 goals for the Eagles White side.

The Basin Cubs and Heathmont White both remain undefeated in the division, having two strong performances on the weekend. They’re set to meet for the first time in season 2023 in Round Nine this year.

Division Four Silvan Cats 38 def Kilsyth Cougars Red 36 Vermont Eagles Purple 35 lost to Montrose Flames 38 Kilsyth Cougars Black 30 def Park Orchards Black 27 FTG Eagles White 30 def East Ringwood Teal 24 Oakleigh District Black 36 def UFTG Red 11

In one of the most even divisions in the competition, three games were decided by three points or less. There was a shootout at HE Parker when Montrose gave Vermont their first loss of the season by three points.

The game was all tied at halftime and remained close for the rest of the game. Kellie Phillips and Stephanie Verhoef went head-to-head at different ends of the court, scoring 24 and 25 goals respectively.

At Oxley Court, there were a couple of momentum shifts between Kilsyth Black and Park Orchards Black. Without a bench, The Sharks pushed Kilsyth for four quarters but Courtney Muller’s impressive 23-goal performance saw the Cougars hold on for their third win of the year.

Division Five Vermont Eagles Lilac 19 lost to Balwyn Tigers 22 South Croydon Blue 23 lost to Chirnside Park Panthers Grey 35 Coldstream White 19 lost to Park Orchards Red 44 Silvan Cats Blue 41 def East Burwood Silver 17 Boronia Hawks 28 def Whitehorse Pioneers 17

The undefeated Balwyn side was given a scare by Vermont Eagles Lilac at Waverley last Friday. The Tigers held on for a three-point win after trailing at Half Time. It was Vermont’s first loss of the season which sees them on four wins and a loss with Park Orchards and Silvan.

Both Park Orchards and Silvan had big wins over their opponents last week, winning by 25 and 24 points respectively. Georgie Haynes and Samantha Murty combined for 41 points in what was the Cats’ highest score of the season so far.

Division Six UFTG Blue 27 lost to Chirnside Park Panthers 43 Lilydale Blue 40 def East Ringwood White 31 GWH Yellow 33 def Ringwood White 31 Waverley Blues White 19 drew with Bayswater Black 19 Vermont Eagles Black 24 def Knox Black 23

The undefeated Glen Waverley Hawks had to come from behind to keep their five-game winning streak alive. The Hawks trailed a very gallant Ringwood outfit at both the Half Time and Three-Quarter Time breaks.

A brave effort from the Redbacks who didn’t have anyone coming off the bench, Nicole Stagg scored 20 of their 31 goals while Tianah Shane shot another 21 goals to add to her already impressive tally of 91.

Over at Oxley, Waverley Blues and Bayswater played off in another draw this round. Waverley took a while to get going, scoring just one goal in the opening quarter but after that, it was a very even contest with Bayswater’s Ruby Walters scoring 16 goals.

Division Seven FTG Eagles Yellow 27 def Kilsyth Cougars White 18 Oakleigh District Grey 23 def Heathmont Blue Waverley Blues Red 45 def Montrose Devils 13 Montrose Thunder 37 def Norwood Purple 19 Ringwood Black 14 lost to Coldstream Blue 45

Yet another draw this week, South Belgrave and Nunawading Lions Black drew 22 each. The Saints led all night until Nunawading’s eight goals to five last quarter saw scores all tied up at the end of the night. The scoring was well spread out between both teams across the evening with South Belgrave’s Mika Baram leading the night with 11 goals.
